VLF High Voltage Test System
Information about VLF High Voltage Test System
Very Low Frequency (VLF) testing is a type of AC cable maintenance routine that utilizes low frequencies. Compared to AC testers, VLF testers are smaller and more practical while still outputting the same amount of power as a 50 Hz mains device. This makes VLF cable testing ideal for longer cable sections and apparatus.
While AC is the standard for power transmission worldwide, VLF testing is effective within this parameter due to its sinusoidal voltage waveform. However, AC transmission is not as efficient as direct current transmission, resulting in high capacitive loss due to the inherent coupling between phases. This requires generating systems to supply more energy to compensate for the losses during transmission. VLF testers, with their small size and high power, can help solve this transmission loss issue during AC testing on long cable sections and apparatus in the field.
VLF testing provides a working frequency of 0.1Hz, significantly reducing the physical size of the test set compared to the 50/60Hz required for live transmission. Despite the smaller size of the VLF test equipment, the test object still receives the Alternating Sinusoidal Voltage that would be supplied through everyday use, making VLF testing an efficient and practical option for cable maintenance. Additionally, VLF testing eliminates the need for on-site generation, large step-down transformers, or generating company supplies to power the items being tested.
Operating procedures of VLF High Voltage Test System
Connect the VLF High Voltage Test System to the equipment to be tested, using the appropriate cables and connectors.
Set the test parameters, including the test voltage, frequency, and duration. These parameters can be adjusted using the system's control panel.
Start the test by pressing the "start" button on the control panel. The VLF High Voltage Test System will begin generating the test voltage.
Monitor the test progress using the system's built-in display. The display will show the test voltage, frequency, and duration, as well as any alarms or warnings that may occur during the test.
When the test is complete, the VLF High Voltage Test System will automatically shut down. The test results can be displayed on the system's screen, or saved to a USB drive for later analysis.
Disconnect the VLF High Voltage Test System from the equipment being tested, and store the system in a safe and secure location.
