The GD-3100 High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system is utilized for analyzing the mass concentration of furfural (P(C:H02)) in transformer oil, which serves as an indicator for assessing the condition of paper insulation within transformer equipment. This analytical method provides a clear diagnosis of whether overheating faults are associated with paper insulation and can identify issues such as long-term low-temperature overheating of the internal insulation, which may be caused by oil flow paths or other factors, as well as the aging of local paper insulation and the overall life expectancy of an aging transformer. The process allows for sampling while the equipment is in operation, making it a convenient and effective tool for transformer maintenance and diagnostics.

How to Read a Chromatogram

A chromatogram refers to a graphical representation obtained through chromatography. An example of a chromatogram is shown in Figure below. It is a two-dimensional plot where the vertical axis represents the concentration measured by the detector's signal intensity, and the horizontal axis represents the time of analysis. When no substances are eluted from the column, a line parallel to the horizontal axis, known as the baseline, is plotted. The detector's response is based on the concentration of the desired compound in the elution band. The resulting plot typically exhibits a bell-shaped curve rather than a triangular shape, which is known as a "peak."

Retention time (tR) refers to the time interval between the point of sample injection and the highest point (apex) of the peak. The dead time (t0) is the time required for non-retained compounds (compounds that do not interact with the stationary phase) to travel from the injector to the detector.

Peak height (h) represents the vertical distance between the baseline and the apex of a peak, while the peak area (A), depicted in light blue, corresponds to the enclosed area between the peak and the baseline. These results are utilized for both qualitative and quantitative analyses of the components present in a sample.
