Test principle and importance

The tester applies a high voltage between two electrodes immersed in insulating oil and measures the voltage when electrical breakdown occurs. This value is then compared with the standard value specified for a specific type and grade of oil.

The breakdown voltage is an important characteristic of insulating oil because it indicates the ability of insulating oil to suppress discharge and breakdown under high voltage stress. Generally, it is required to be >30KV, otherwise the oil needs to be replaced or processed. The degree of oil quality change is indirectly judged through human sense of smell and colorimeter detection.
