ASTM Method D1177 is a test method covering laboratory methods for determining the freezing point of aqueous coolant solutions.
For certain petroleum-derived matrices, ASTM method D938 covers the determination of the freezing point of petroleum waxes, including petroleum jelly. Such testing can be performed by laboratories specializing in petrochemical analysis of automotive lubricants, gear oils, hydraulic oils and waxes.
The freezing point of the aviation fuel is the lowest temperature at which the fuel remains free of solid hydrocarbon crystals that can restrict the flow of fuel through filters if present in the fuel system of the aircraft.
The temperature of the fuel in the aircraft tank normally decreases during flight depending on aircraft speed, altitude, and flight duration.
The freezing point of the fuel must always be lower than the minimum operational fuel temperature.
The freezing point analyzer is also suitable for measuring the freezing point of aqueous engine coolant solutions by cooling a sample with continuous agitation until a plateau is observed in a time-temperature curve.
