ASTM D6084 Auto Ductilometer for Elastic Recovery of Asphalt Materials Test
Asphalt ductility tester is a very important instrument in the fields of road engineering and asphalt material research.
The asphalt ductility tester is mainly used to measure the ductility of asphalt. The elongation index reflects the degree of deformation that asphalt can undergo when subjected to tensile stress. Simply put, it is the ability of asphalt to be stretched without breaking. In road construction, the ductility of asphalt directly affects the flexibility and crack resistance of the pavement. If the asphalt has sufficient ductility, the road surface can better withstand tensile deformation under external forces such as vehicle driving, reduce the occurrence of cracks, and thus extend the service life of the road.
Ductility is the ability of a material to undergo a visible enduring deformation through elongation (decreasing of cross section area). It expresses the extent to which the material can be plastically deformed without fracture. The opposite material behavior is brittleness.
The test for elastic recovery is applicable to binders modified with elastomers and serves to demonstrate the modification of the binder. The sample is stretched at a fixed temperature and speed to a maximum of 20 cm and then severed. After a prescribed period of time, the degree of elastic recovery is determined relative to the original length.
Principle of tensile testing
The asphalt ductility tester operates based on tensile testing. Firstly, the pre treated asphalt sample is shaped into a specific form, typically an "8" or dumbbell shape. This is because these shapes can be subjected to relatively uniform force during the stretching process and meet relevant testing standards.
Then place the sample in the instrument's water tank, where the temperature can be controlled. This is because the physical properties of asphalt are greatly affected by temperature. At a specified temperature (such as 25 ºC), asphalt is in a suitable state for accurate measurement of its ductility.
After starting the asphalt ductility tester, the asphalt sample is stretched at a certain speed (such as 5cm/min) through a mechanical device, as if pulling the asphalt sample at both ends to make it longer. During the stretching process, the instrument accurately measures the tensile length of the asphalt sample from the beginning of stretching to the final fracture, which is the elongation of the asphalt, usually measured in centimeters (cm).
