The Kinematic Viscosity Testing Equipment working principle is to put the sample into the selected capillary viscometer, the capillary immersed in the constant temperature bath. The sample will be sucked into the calibration position. When the sample flows to the upper calibration position, the instrument will start recording time automatically. When the sample flows through the lower calibration position, the instrument will stop recording time automatically. The instrument will automatically calculate the kinematic viscosity of the specimen.
Why is kinematic viscosity measured in terms of time?
Actually, it it not measured in terms of time. The units of Kinematic viscosity is area/time. (say m^2/sec)
Generally, viscosity is of two types:
Dynamic: Which assesses the fluid's load bearing capacity. How much force is required to shear the fluid layers ?
Kinematic: Where the fluid's ability to flow is taken into account. How fast can the fluid flow ?
In both cases, the fluid's property of viscosity plays a role. But, the applications are different.
Kinematic viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow. It is typically measured in terms of time because it describes the amount of time it takes for a fluid to flow a certain distance. For example, if a fluid has a high kinematic viscosity, it will take longer for it to flow a certain distance than a fluid with a lower kinematic viscosity. This property is important in many industrial and engineering applications, such as in the design of pipelines and machinery.
