Significance of Ductility Test of Bitumen:
>>> Bitumen Ductility test apparatus is used to Determine petroleum asphalt under the predetermined conditions and in certain temperature, at a certain speed stretch to fracture length,called petroleum asphalt ductility, expressed in cm.
>>> Ductility Test Apparatus conducts ductility tests of bituminous materials to measure the elongation of a binder specimen before failure. The ends of a molded specimen are pulled apart in a liquid-filled trough at a specified speed and temperature.
>>> The ductility test of the bitumen sample is one of the important tests of bitumen to be conducted before road construction.
>>> The bituminous binder used in the pavement should be ductile enough to take up the deformations acting upon it without exceeding the deflection limit. Ductile bitumen can form a thin ductile film around the aggregate particles. Thus, it does not crack at low temperatures. However, the films of brittle bitumen are not ductile and cracks may easily develop in lower temperatures.

Procedure for ductility test of bitumen
1. The bitumen sample is heated to bring it in a fluid state and poured in the briquette assembly and placed on a brass plate.
2. The whole equipment including the bitumen briquette along with brass plate is allowed to cool in the air.
3. A hot knife is used to cut the excess bitumen and also the surface is leveled with the help of a hot knife.
4. The whole assembly now is kept in a bath maintained at 27 oC for about 85 to 95 minutes.
5. The side of the mould removed, the clips hooked on the machine, and the pointer adjusted to zero value or initial reading noted.
6. Now the clips are pulled apart horizontally at the rate of 50 mm per minute and the distance up to the point of the breaking of a thread is noted. This distance in cms gives the value of the ductility of bitumen.
7. The ductility of bitumen may vary from 5 to over 100 for different bitumen grades, but for satisfactory performance, it should not be less than 50.
8. The ductility of bitumen is dependent upon pouring temperature, dimensions of the briquette, test temperature, the rate of pulling, etc.
