Low-Temperature Precision Penetrometer for Bitumen Penetration Test ASTM D5

Needle penetration tester is an instrument used to measure the hardness or consistency of solid, semi-solid, or paste materials. It mainly obtains the penetration value of the material by measuring the depth of the standard needle vertically penetrating the material under certain conditions, in order to evaluate the physical properties of the material. This instrument is widely used in multiple industries, especially in the quality testing and product development process of materials such as petroleum, asphalt, grease, wax, etc. It plays a key role.

Principle

The working principle of the penetration tester is based on using the penetration of a standard needle to characterize the physical state of materials under specified temperature, load, and time conditions. Taking asphalt as an example, place the asphalt sample on a testing platform, apply a fixed weight (such as 100g) through a needle rod with a standard needle at a certain temperature (such as 25 ºC), and let the needle pierce the asphalt sample within a specified time (such as 5s). The degree of penetration is related to the softness and hardness of the material. The deeper the penetration, the softer the material, and the higher the penetration value; On the contrary, if the needle is inserted shallowly, it indicates that the material is harder and the needle penetration value is smaller.

The Asphalt Penetrometer is designed and made as per T0604-2011 Penetration Test for Bituminous Materials in JTG E20-2011 Specification and Test Methods of Bitumen and Bituminous Mixture for Highway Engineering and ASTM D5 Standard Test Method for Penetration of Bituminous Materials. It is used to determine the penetration of pavement petroleum asphalt, modified asphalt, liquid petroleum asphalt and emulsified asphalt.
2. The Asphalt Penetrometer is also suitable to test solid particle, powder, colloid and raw-food materials such as cheese, glycine, butter, cream and leavening.
