Overview of Hplc

HPLC stands for High Performance Liquid Chromatography, which is a technique used for separating compounds in a liquid sample. The instrument used for conducting chromatography is called a chromatograph, while the result of chromatography is called a chromatogram. The key components of chromatographs are the columns for molecular separation and high-performance pumps for delivering solvents at a stable flow rate. As related technologies have advanced, HPLC has become commonly referred to as LC, and Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) has become more widespread for high-speed analysis.
 
In HPLC, only compounds dissolved in solvents can be analyzed. A mobile phase solvent is used to separate the components in the liquid sample, which is delivered to a separation column called the stationary phase, and then to the detector at a stable flow rate controlled by the solvent delivery pump. A certain amount of sample is injected into the column, and the compounds in the sample are separated. The compounds are detected downstream of the column by a detector, and each compound is identified and quantified. Figure 1 provides a basic overview of the HPLC process.
