Test method of HIPOT withstand voltage test
A voltage withstand tester usually connects one side of the power supply to a safety ground (earth). The other end of the power supply is connected to the conductor under test. By connecting the power supply in this way, you can connect the given conductor to two positions: high voltage or ground.
If you have more than two contacts to be tested for voltage resistance, you can connect one contact to high voltage and ground all other contacts. Testing the contact in this manner ensures that it is isolated from all other contacts. If the insulation between the two is adequate, then applying a large voltage difference between the two conductors separated by the insulator will result in a very small current flow. Although this small current is acceptable, no breakdown of either the air insulation or the solid insulation should occur. Therefore, the perceived current is the current due to partial discharge or breakdown, not the current due to capacitive coupling.
