ASTM D874 Sulfated Ash Test for Sulfated Ash in Engine Oil, Lubricating Oils and Additives
Introduction:
The Sulfated Ash Tester is applied to unused lubricating oils containing additives and from additive concentrates in biodiesel. The sample is ignited and burned in a crucible until only ash and carbon remain. After cooling, the residue is treated with sulfuric acid and heated at 775°C until carbon oxidation is complete.
The sulfated ash is measured as it can be used to indicate the concentration of known metal-containing additives in new oils.
