Product Description

The Rust Preventing Characteristics Oil Bath is used to determine the lubricant's ability to prevent rusting of metal surfaces. The Rust Preventing Characteristics Tester can be applied to steam turbine oils, gear oils, hydraulic oils and other types of inhibited mineral oils. A steel test specimen is immersed in a heated mixture of sample oil and water which is stirred continuously during the test. After the test period the specimen is examined for rusting.
 

Test method:
The ASTM D665 test evaluates the rust prevention capacity of industrial oils when exposed to water contamination. The test can be conducted using either distilled water or synthetic seawater. This test is essential to ensure that the oils used in industrial applications are of high quality and can withstand harsh conditions. It helps in maintaining the integrity of machinery, preventing rust and corrosion, and prolonging their lifespan. By performing this test, industries can prevent downtime and reduce the costs associated with repairs and replacements. 
The test consists of stirring a mixture of 300 milliliters of the oil being tested with 30 milliliters of water, either distilled or sea water, at 140°F (60°C) for four hours. A special cylindrical steel test specimen made of #1018 cold-finished carbon steel is polished and then completely immersed in the test fluid. At the end of the four-hour test period, the specimen is removed, washed with solvent, and rated for rust.
