What is the Tan Delta Test of Transformer Oil?

The Tan Delta test of the transformer oil is the measurement of the level of imperfection of the transformer oil's dielectric nature.
The Tan Delta test of the transformer oil also know as the dissipation factor or the dielectric dissipation factor of transformer oil or the dissipation factor of the transformer oil.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to obtain insulating oil that is completely free from contamination.



In the presence of impurities in the insulating oil, the current and voltage will be shifted by less than 90 degrees.
The angle by which it is short of 90 degrees is called the loss angle.
If a dielectric loss angle is higher, this indicates a greater degree of insulation contamination and this, in turn, can result in the overall low quality or reliability of the insulating oil. 
The power factor is defined as the cosine of the angle (90-loss angle).
The tan delta or dissipation factor or dielectric dissipation factor is the tangent of the loss angle.
The dissipation factor is typically measured as a percentage.
The loss factor (angle) relates to the inability of molecules in the oil to reorient themselves with an alternating electric field.
This ability is dependent on the temperature of the sample, the size of the molecules involved, and their polarity.
It also depends on the frequency of the alternating field. 
So, both the power factor and the tan delta are affected by the molecular size, composition, and relative orientation of functional groups within the molecules. 
Therefore, it is essential to monitor the quality of insulating oil through either the Tan Delta or Power Factor Test.
