Rolling Thin Film Oven Test Equipment
Asphalt film oven is a testing equipment used to simulate the aging process of asphalt during use. In fields such as road engineering, asphalt will age under long-term natural environments (such as sunlight exposure, air oxidation, etc.) and usage conditions (such as vehicle loads, temperature changes, etc.), leading to a decline in its performance. The asphalt film oven accelerates the aging process of asphalt in a laboratory environment, helping researchers and quality inspectors evaluate the performance changes of asphalt after aging, providing important basis for asphalt selection, mix design, and road service life prediction.
Basic structure:
The moving film of asphalt instrument consists of an oven working room, a turntable rotating mechanism, and an electrical control part. Four sample containers can be placed on the turntable at the same time. The indoor temperature is automatically controlled by a digital display temperature controller.
Brief introduction:
Rolling Thin Film Oven (RTFO) Test measures the effect of heat and air on a moving film of hot mix asphalt binder, simulating short-term aging that occurs during production and paving operations.
RTFO Test Procedure:
1. A sample of asphalt binder is heated and dispensed into special glass specimen bottles;
2. The bottles are mounted horizontally in a carousel in the oven;
3. Bottles are rotated at 15rpm for 85 minutes as a jet of 163 °C heated air is directed into them;
4. At the completion of the RTFO test, the mass change, viscosity, and other rheological properties are measured;
5. Measurements are then compared to values from unheated samples;

The working principle of the asphalt film oven is to evenly spread a certain quality of asphalt sample into a thin film shape and place it in an oven with stable temperature and ventilation conditions. At the specified temperature (usually 163 ºC) and time (usually 5 hours), fully expose the asphalt to hot air to accelerate the aging process such as oxidation and volatilization of the asphalt. During this process, the light components in the asphalt will evaporate, and the asphalt molecules will react chemically with oxygen in the air, causing changes in the chemical composition and physical properties of the asphalt, such as decreased penetration, increased softening point, and decreased ductility. These changes can be detected through subsequent experiments.
