Importance of HIPOT withstand voltage test
The withstand voltage test is a non-destructive test used to determine the adequacy of electrical insulation for normally occurring overvoltage transients. It is a high-voltage test that is performed on all equipment for a specific period of time to ensure that the insulation is not in a critical condition.
The withstand voltage test helps to detect chipped or crushed insulation, stray strands or braided shields, conductive or corrosive contaminants around conductors, terminal spacing problems, and tolerance errors in cables.
Inadequate creepage and clearance distances are also introduced during the manufacturing process. The production line withstand voltage test is a test of the manufacturing process to determine if the construction of the production unit is approximately the same as the construction of the unit undergoing type testing. Some of the process faults that can be detected by production line withstand voltage testing include, for example, transformers that are wound in such a way that creepage distances and clearances are reduced, a fault that is likely to be caused by operator error in the winding department.
It also has many practical applications, including identifying pinhole defects in the insulation or finding enlarged solder marks.
