Introduction:
A Very Low Frequency AC Hipot Tester is a type of AC output tester that applies an AC voltage to a capacitive load, such as a long cable or a large generator, with an output frequency of 0.1 Hz or lower. The tester is designed to verify the AC integrity of a cable or other equipment by conducting a voltage withstand test, which is essentially an alternative to the traditional power frequency withstand voltage test.
Compared to a power frequency hipot tester, a VLF hipot tester requires much less current and power to apply an AC voltage to a capacitive load. For example, at 0.1 Hz output, it takes 600 times less current and power to test a cable than at 60 Hz. This is because the lower the frequency of an AC source, the lower the current and power required to apply a voltage to a capacitive load like a cable.
A VLF AC Hipot Tester can be used to field test high capacitance loads like cables and motors/generators, and is especially valuable for verifying a cable after installation or repair. It is recommended to use an AC voltage test with a VLF tester to verify the AC integrity of a cable, as it is the best way to detect any defects that may cause in-service failure.
A VLF AC Hipot Tester is fully automated in voltage rise, voltage drop, measurement, and protection, and can be controlled by a microcomputer. The output voltage, current, and waveform data are directly sampled from the high voltage side, ensuring accurate data. The tester also has overvoltage and overcurrent protection functions, and the high-voltage output protection resistor is designed in the booster body, eliminating the need for an external protection resistor.
VLF AC Hipot Testers are widely available from various manufacturers and can be purchased in different models with different voltage levels, such as 80kV, 50kV, or 30kV.The testers can be used for a variety of field and repair shop HV testing applications, and are designed to be portable and affordable.
