»Facts about the ASTM D93 Standard Test Method: The methods cover the determination of the flash point of petroleum products in the temperature range from 40 to 370°C, and of biodiesel by an automated Pensky-Martens closed cup apparatus in the temperature range of 60 to 190°C.
The closed flash point tester mainly uses the characteristic of instantaneous flash when a mixture of vapor evaporated from flammable liquids and air is exposed to a fire source at a certain temperature and pressure to determine the flash point. Instruments usually use a heated sample cup to gradually increase the temperature of the sample, while continuously stirring the sample to make it evaporate evenly. When the temperature rises to a certain level, the instrument will release an ignition source at regular intervals or according to the set conditions, and observe whether there is a flash of steam and air mixture above the sample. The temperature corresponding to the first occurrence of flash is the closed flash point of the sample. Some advanced testers also use sensors to detect weak signals such as light, heat, or pressure changes generated at the moment of flash, accurately determining the flash point temperature and automatically recording it.
