Tan Delta, also known as loss angle or dielectric loss factor or power factor test, is a dielectric test performed on insulating oil to determine its quality and ensure safe and reliable operation of transformers.

The dielectric loss factor tanδ and resistivity are very sensitive to the presence of soluble polar impurities, aging products, and charged colloids in the oil. At higher temperatures, the dielectric loss factor and resistivity usually have a good correlation. The dielectric loss factor increases and the resistivity decreases. The dielectric loss factor and resistivity of the oil directly affect the insulation performance of electrical equipment.
