Basic structure

 

Basic structure of atomic absorption spectrometer

1. Light source: produces light with characteristic wavelengths of the analyzed elements. The common ones are hollow cathode lamp (HCL), stepless discharge lamp (EDL) and ultralight (UltrAA Lamp).
2. Atomizer: convert the analyzed elements in the sample into free atoms in proportion. The energy required is usually heating. Commonly used methods are air-acetylene, nitrous oxide-acetylene flame and electric heating. Atomized atoms absorb light.
3. Optical system: guide the light into the atomic vapor and guide the outgoing light into the monochromator.
4. Monochromator: Separate the characteristic wavelength of the specific analyzed element produced by the element lamp from other non-characteristic wavelengths.
5. Detector: A photosensitive detector (usually a photomultiplier tube) accurately measures the light intensity and converts it into an electrical signal
6. Electronic circuit: converts the corresponding value of the detector into a useful analytical measurement value

Process of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometer
1. Radiation from the specific light source is focused on the atomic vapor in the flame. 
2. The radiation then enters a monochromator, which isolates the line of interest.
3. The light is then measured by a photomultiplier tube (detector). 
4. The signal is then processed and the computer system prints the output on screen.
