The Rolling Thin-Film Oven (RTFO) procedure provides simulated short term aged asphalt binder for physical property testing. Asphalt binder is exposed to elevated temperatures to simulate manufacturing and placement aging. The RTFO also provides a quantitative measure of the volatiles lost during the aging process and describes the chemical composition of asphalt, which is relevant for the development of materials with higher quality and durability.
The basic RTFO procedure takes unaged asphalt binder samples in cylindrical glass bottles and places these bottles in a rotating carriage within an oven. The carriage rotates within the oven while the 325°F (163°C) temperature ages the samples for 85 minutes. Samples are then stored for use in physical properties tests .

Procedure

RTFO Test Procedure:
1. A sample of asphalt binder is heated and dispensed into special glass specimen bottles
2. The bottles are mounted horizontally in a carousel in the oven
3. Bottles are rotated at 15rpm for 85 minutes as a jet of 325°F heated air is directed into them
4. At the completion of the RTFO test, the mass change, viscosity, and other rheological properties are measured
5. Remove the bottles from the carousel one at a time and set the mass change bottles aside. The residue in the remaining bottle should be transferred to a container. Remove residue from each bottle by first pouring in as much material as possible, then scraping the sides of the bottles to remove any remaining residue. There is no standard scraping tool, but at least 90% of the asphalt binder should be removed from the bottle. RTFO residue should be tested within 72 hours of aging.
6. After cooling the two mass change vials for 60 - 180 min, weigh and discard the residue. Record the weight.

B = final sample weight

Asphalt rotary film oven maintenance :
1. This equipment can only be used for asphalt rotating film heating test. The upper limit of the operating temperature of the equipment is 200°C, and it is equipped with an over-temperature protection function.
2. After use, the power should be cut off, the door should be opened for ventilation, and the residue in the box should be wiped clean.
3. Wash the sample bottle with gasoline or trichlorethylene.
